Add Unique Touches to a Funeral

My name is Evan, and I am a funeral director at a busy funeral home in the Midwestern United States. I have found that many loved ones want to personalize the funeral experience, but they simply don't know how. I am going to outline some ways that you can make a funeral unique to the person you are celebrating. From dramatic readings to favorite music to decorated caskets, the only limit is your imagination when it comes to planning the perfect funeral. I hope your mind will be open to the possibilities the next time you are in the unfortunate situation of having to plan a funeral.

Sending Funeral Flowers With Symbolic Sentiments

Christina Clarke

If a simple funeral arrangement won't do, send flowers that have underlying meaning to convey your special sentiment. Different blooms and greens have distinct meanings, some which are rooted in history and others that have adopted these traits through popular culture. Talk to your florist about creating distinctive arrangements that will express how you feel at this difficult time.

Say something special with the flowers you send to a funeral:

Undying love and devotion. If you want to send the message of your love and devotion at a funeral or service, choose red tulips, heliotrope, or lavender. Furthermore, violets and jasmine signify pure, undying affection.

A message of hope. To send an uplifting message of hope, choose bouquets of daisies, accented with sprigs of holly. Tiny tea roses also signify youth and new life. Have your florist create a combination of these to make the perfect gift to send to the bereaved family.

Regret and grief. When expressing grief, choose red carnations, lemon balm, and orange roses. If you want to convey a sense of regret, such as from an unresolved dispute, choose purple hyacinths. Red poppies are considered to be the flower that symbolizes condolences at a time of loss.

A nod to the past. To channel the good old days, send crocus, which represents past youth. If you send pink carnations to a funeral, you are indicating that the deceased will never be forgotten. Add some sprigs of mint to convey the deceased's sense of virtue.

Admiration of strength. If you admire the strength of the individual that has passed, or if they battled a terminal illness and showed great resolve, send something to reflect this. Thyme signifies inner-strength, plus it smells amazing in a floral bouquet or arrangement. Use hollyhock and nasturtium to also pay homage to the deceased's integrity and resolve.

Some other floral conveyances include:

  • Sage symbolizes immortality.
  • Zinnias pay homage to a lost friend.
  • Fresh ferns send a message of sincerity.
  • Daffodils convey that the deceased will always be held in high regard.
  • Yellow tulips are given to someone with a great smile.
  • Willow represents overwhelming sadness.
  • Lily of the Valley symbolizes sweetness and purity.
