Add Unique Touches to a Funeral

My name is Evan, and I am a funeral director at a busy funeral home in the Midwestern United States. I have found that many loved ones want to personalize the funeral experience, but they simply don't know how. I am going to outline some ways that you can make a funeral unique to the person you are celebrating. From dramatic readings to favorite music to decorated caskets, the only limit is your imagination when it comes to planning the perfect funeral. I hope your mind will be open to the possibilities the next time you are in the unfortunate situation of having to plan a funeral.

Ideas For Giving Away Saplings To Funeral Attendees

Christina Clarke

While you don't need to give anything away to those who show up to pay their respects at a funeral for your family member, it's often nice to offer a keepsake following the service. Giving away something that the attendees can plant is an idea that never goes out of style, and buying a number of small saplings from your local garden center can be a perfect choice. Each funeral attendee can take his or her sapling home and plant it in a special place, and then remember the life of your loved one when looking at the tree as it grows. Here are some ideas for giving away saplings.

Choose An Appropriate Type

While your first instinct might be to buy saplings of trees that the deceased person liked, this might not always be the best choice. You should think about buying trees that are suitable for your environment. For example, if the person loved fruit trees but you live in a colder environment in which fruit trees are unlikely to bear fruit, there's little value in providing these saplings to those at the funeral. Whether you go with a coniferous or deciduous sapling, it's ideal if it's one that will grow and thrive in your area.

Make Them Easy To Transport

When people are attending a funeral, they aren't necessarily prepared to take home a sapling. As such, you want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for the attendees to leave the funeral home with this keepsake. For example, you don't want the sapling to be sitting in an open pot filled with dirt, as this can make a mess on peoples' formal clothing. A better idea is to take the sapling in its pot and carefully wrap a small section of burlap cloth around the pot, tying it against the trunk of the sapling with a piece of string or ribbon. This will prevent the dirt from escaping.

Add A Card

Tying a small card to the ribbon or string that adds a little relevant information can be a nice way to augment the saplings that you'll be giving out after the funeral. Design a card to feature a small photo of the person who has passed away, and include some relevant details. The person's full name and the dates of his or her birth and death are suitable to add, and you may also wish to include the date of the funeral and the name of the funeral home. If possible, a quote about the value of planting trees can also be nice.
